Reggie Nelson graduated from Palm Bay High School in Melbourne, Florida in 2003. As a two-time First Team All-State Honoree in 2002, Reggie helped Palm Bay High School win the 4A State Championship. After high school, Reggie chose to attend the University of Florida rather than rival Florida State. While playing for the Gators, Reggie was selected for the Jack Tatum Award (given to the nation's best Defensive Back) by the Touchdown Club in Columbus. Reggie also earned first team All-America Honors from the Associated Press and was named a first-team All-American by Rivals.com. In 2006, Reggie recorded 51 tackles, 5 pass breakups and 6 interceptions. Reggie played in all 14 games, including the Gator's first SEC Championship win in 6 years and a win over Ohio State in the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game.
In the 2007 NFL draft, Reggie was chosen in the first round (21st pick overall) by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Reggie started 15 of 16 games as a rookie and ended the year with 63 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble. In 2008, Reggie started 12 games and finished with 64 tackles (45 of them solo) and two interceptions. Reggie started in 14 games in 2009 and ended the season with 70 tackles and 5 deflected passes.
